Audi's RS badge has meant one thing consistently for over three decades: a core model transformed by a large-displacement turbocharged engine, extraordinary power, and quattro all-wheel drive tuned for outright performance. The RS2, RS4, RS6, generation after generation of cars that defined what a fast saloon or estate could be, and built a following as loyal as any in performance motoring.
Which makes 2026 a genuinely landmark moment. The new RS5, available in both saloon and Avant body styles, is the first RS car in history to be offered as a plug-in hybrid. That sentence would have surprised, and probably alarmed, traditional RS enthusiasts even a few years ago. The question is whether electrification strengthens or dilutes what makes an RS Audi special.
The RS5 PHEV combines a twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine with an electric motor to produce a combined 639PS, roughly 630 horsepower. That is a significant increase over the outgoing RS5's 450bhp, and it comes with the characteristic instant torque delivery of a hybrid drivetrain. The electric motor fills the small but perceptible gap between pressing the throttle and the turbos building boost, a gap that driving purists have always noticed in turbocharged RS cars, even the best of them.
The result, if Audi's engineers have calibrated the system well, should feel sharper and more immediate at every speed. Audi has confirmed that the plug-in system provides a meaningful electric-only range for urban driving, practical for company car drivers, where the hybrid designation reduces benefit-in-kind tax liability considerably.
Alongside the saloon, Audi is giving equal prominence to the RS5 Avant. In the UK market, this will likely prove the more popular choice. The tradition of RS Avant estates, the RS4 Avant, the RS6 Avant in particular, has become a fixture in British performance motoring. These are cars that combine genuinely serious performance with the practicality of an estate body: four adults, a full boot, and the ability to cover a motorway at a pace that embarrasses most sports cars.
The RS5 Avant PHEV continues that lineage while adding the hybrid powertrain's real-world benefits. Regular charging keeps running costs lower for high-mileage users, and the electric-only capability means the car can cover short urban commutes without the V6 running at all. It is a more rounded proposition than any previous RS5, even if it requires a small adjustment in expectation from those accustomed to pure-petrol RS cars.
Audi features prominently in the Avant Drive fleet. Both the Audi S4 Avant and the Audi A5 are available for self-drive hire from Bristol, with nationwide delivery. The S4 Avant in particular offers a compelling preview of what Audi's high-performance estate formula feels like in practice, all-wheel drive, a rapid automatic gearbox, and genuine pace wrapped in understated, premium styling.
The RS5's move to a plug-in hybrid marks a new chapter for one of the most respected nameplates in performance motoring. For those who have experienced what an RS Audi feels like, 630 horsepower of electrified performance is a compelling prospect. For those yet to try the badge, our Bristol fleet is an excellent place to start.
