Maserati has never been content to leave well enough alone. The MC20, which arrived in 2021 as the brand's long-awaited return to pure supercar territory, has now been refreshed, retouched and rebadged for 2026. The new name is MCPura, a designation that carries connotations of purity and focused intent, and it comes alongside a set of changes designed to sharpen the car's visual identity without unsettling what already works.
British motoring publication PistonHeads has now driven the Cielo variant of the MCPura in the UK, and the verdict is that Maserati has delivered a confident update rather than a wholesale reinvention. The MC20 Cielo was already a remarkable machine, with a glass roof panel that retracts in 12 seconds at speeds below 30mph to create a genuine open-air supercar. The MCPura Cielo retains all of that and then adds a little more drama to the proposition.
The most visible updates are at the front of the car. The grille has been redesigned with a more trapezoidal shape, replacing the softer oval form of the original MC20. The intakes beneath the headlights are now more angular, and a revised front splitter adds a more aggressive edge to the overall nose. These are not dramatic changes, but they give the MCPura a slightly more purposeful look compared to its predecessor.
Inside, Maserati has replaced leather with Alcantara as the default upholstery, though leather remains available to order. The steering wheel now features a flattened top and bottom section, borrowing a detail from the world of motorsport now found across many high-performance cars. New performance data is accessible through the infotainment touchscreen, and the seat design has been revised for what Maserati describes as an improved driving position.
Enthusiasts will be relieved to hear that nothing has changed under the engine lid. The MCPura is still powered by Maserati's Nettuno twin-turbocharged V6, producing 621 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. The sprint from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour takes around 2.9 seconds, and the throttle response through the mid-range is just as immediate and rewarding as it was on the original MC20. When a supercar engine is this good, leaving it alone is the wisest decision a manufacturer can make.
The Cielo adds a targa-style glass roof that transforms the MCPura into a genuine open-air car rather than a fixed hard-top coupe. It weighs 12 kilograms more than the standard MCPura due to additional carbon fibre reinforcement in the monocoque, but that penalty is barely noticeable in practice. What the Cielo does offer is a dramatically heightened sensory experience: the V6 soundtrack fills the cabin more directly, the connection to the surrounding environment is immediate, and on a clear motorway run or a fast Welsh coast road, it would be difficult to imagine a more exhilarating way to cover ground. US pricing for the MCPura Cielo starts at approximately $281,000.
For Maserati, the MCPura arrives at a significant moment. The brand has several important new models in development, including an all-electric Levante SUV planned for 2027 and a new flagship saloon to eventually succeed the Quattroporte. The MCPura helps to keep the supercar halo alive and visible while those longer-term projects take shape, reminding the market that Maserati can compete on driving dynamics as well as style.
