The New Range Rover Velar Goes Electric in 2026

The Range Rover Velar has long occupied a distinctive position in Land Rover's line-up, sleeker and more driver-focused than the full-fat Range Rover, yet unmistakably part of the family. Now, that character is about to evolve dramatically. Jaguar Land Rover has confirmed that the next-generation Velar will be an all-electric car, built on the company's new 800-volt EMA (Electric Modular Architecture) platform, with a spring 2026 launch.

What the New Platform Means

The EMA architecture is a significant leap forward for JLR. Built from the ground up as an electric foundation, it supports faster charging than older EV platforms, early data points to 800-volt compatibility that allows rapid top-ups that make long journeys genuinely practical. Think adding a hundred miles of range in under fifteen minutes at a suitable charger, rather than an hour beside a motorway services.

Early images and spy photographs suggest the new Velar takes a more aerodynamic shape than today's car: cleaner surfacing, a lower roofline, and an almost coupe-like silhouette. JLR has spoken openly about positioning this model as its most road-focused Range Rover, with driver appeal and a premium cabin atmosphere at the heart of the brief. This is not an urban runabout wearing a prestige badge, it is being developed as a genuine executive-level grand tourer.

A Broader Strategy at JLR

The Velar's move to EV-only power is part of something larger. Jaguar Land Rover is in the process of giving each of its sub-brands, Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, a clearer identity and market positioning. The full-size Range Rover is establishing itself as the electric flagship of the family; the Velar is carving out its niche as the sportier, more driver-focused alternative. It is a sensible division of roles, and one that should help each model compete more effectively in an increasingly crowded premium SUV segment.

The Current Velar, A Good Time to Drive One

Before the electric era fully arrives, there has rarely been a better time to spend time with the diesel Velar. The current D300 variant, a 3.0-litre inline-six diesel producing 300 horsepower, remains one of the most accomplished luxury SUVs on sale. It sits lower than the full-size Range Rover, handles with a composure that suits fast cross-country driving, and wraps everything in a cabin that blends cool minimalism with proper British premium quality.

At Avant Drive, our Range Rover Velar D300 is available for self-drive hire from Bristol, with nationwide delivery if you'd prefer it brought to your door. Whether you want to experience this generation before the transition to electric, cover some miles in genuine comfort, or simply see what sets the Velar apart from the standard Range Rover, this is a good opportunity. As the new electric model approaches showrooms later this year, we will be following developments closely.
